Granite FAQs

The most commonly asked questions about granite – from colors to care tips

Thinking about adding granite countertops to your kitchen or bathroom? Because of its strength, durability and aesthetic appeal, granite is an excellent choice for homes. Learn more about caring for granite and its unique properties:

What is granite?

Granite is an igneous rock composed of minerals like quartz, feldspar and mica. It ranges in colors from pink and red to black. Because granite is formed as hot liquid stone, it is very hard and strong and can withstand much abrasion and use.

Can you scratch, burn or stain granite countertops?

Granite is one of the strongest stones in the world and is highly resistant to scratching. It can be scratched by another piece of granite or with tools designed to work with granite. Most ordinary kitchen use will not result in scratches or burns to granite countertops. Granite will not be harmed by hot pans or open flames, but be careful not to touch granite after it was exposed to a high temperature: the stone will absorb and retain some heat.

If granite has not been properly stained, it might become stained by standing water or other liquids like red wine, grape juice, grease or oil. Liquids that can evaporate might leave a colored spot, but will disappear quickly. But liquids that do not evaporate can cause stains if left to soak into the stone. If you have granite countertops, get into the habit of wiping up spills as quickly as possible.

How often does the surface need to be sealed?

There is no “cut and dry” answer for how often your granite countertops should be sealed. Granite is a natural stone and each slab can vary in characteristics, such as absorbency. Sealing guidelines depend on the porosity of the granite, the quality of sealer used and the quality of sealer application.

The best way to determine whether or not any stone needs sealing or re-sealing is to perform a water test. Pour about ¼ cup of water onto your counter top and time how long it takes the water to absorb (the granite will darken). If it absorbs within 10 minutes or immediately, it’s time for some more sealer.

What is the best way to clean granite?

Granite should always be cleaned with cleaning products designed for natural stone, or a mild soap and water. Avoid using acidic cleaners, like vinegar, lemon or ammonia.

Can granite be repaired?

If your granite countertops do have a minor crack or chip, professionals can repair them by applying epoxy colored to match the granite, followed by a polishing to match the surrounding areas. Large cracks might require the entire section of stone to be replaced.

What colors are available for granite countertops?

Granite is not only durable, but it has excellent aesthetic appeal, too. Granite comes in many colors that will never fade or dull over time, including: brown, beige, yellow/gold, red, black, blue, green and white.

What surface finishes can be applied to granite?

Polished – A shiny, glossy surface. This is the most popular choice for granite countertop finishes.
Honed – A matte finish
Brushed – A rough texture, usually chosen for outdoor kitchens.

How long will granite countertops last?

The granite is already hundreds or thousands of years old, and it will likely last another thousand years. Because of its strength and durability, granite countertops usually outlast the house they are in.
